Is This Atlantis?

[ keywords > Atlantis, Water, space, objects, forms, mindscape, psychological, imagination, submerged, continuous, endless ]

First found by Plato, Atlantis was in his written text described as a wealthy island where its inhabitants had plenty of access to the necessities of life. After some time, its inhabitants were getting more greedy with every passing day. As a punishment, the gods provoked floods and earthquakes, making the island disappear into the deep seas.

The story of Plato has fascinated scientists for years. For centuries, people have been searching for the lost island, but in vain. Until this day, there seems to be no record of the lost city. Even though Atlantis appears to be non-existent in the modern world, the story and its theories remain relevant until this day. Besides the given information, people expand the concept of Atlantis to something more expressive. Instead of having an island that is swallowed and destroyed by the seas, people create a whole new visualization. The idea of having a city that exists under the waters seems to be a popular concept, especially in art, books, and films.

When it comes to the existence of Atlantis, there is a lack of scientific proof, making it impossible to state that the city is present on our globe. However, there is enough evidence to conclude that Atlantis does actually exist. Instead of a physical city, the island takes shape by forming a mindscape, submerged in the human mind. Every individual has their interpretation of how they imagine the city, confirming that its existence is only prominent in the cognitive. Our physical bodies form the ocean, burring Atlantis deep down inside is. We are given the ultimate freedom while giving shape to this world, for there are no rules that limit imagination.

Is This Atlantis? presents the visual symbols that shape my own Atlantis. Diving deep, the fabrication was buried deeply under the waves. The illustrations bring my vision to the surface, perceptible for the interested. The project was realized by creating a vinyl, including a cover. Despite its walls, the mind is an open space with infinite room for thoughts, beliefs, and imagery. The shape of the vinyl symbolizes this concept, where the vinyl is a continuous shape but has limited space for audio. Its continual movement visualizes the endless activity of the human mind. The cover includes different illustrations of subjects that symbolize my interpretation of the city. The audio on the vinyl contains descriptions of the subjects, explaining how they illustrate my visualization of Atlantis.
